Making a Sketchbook with My Favorite Paper and Fabric
Recently, I’ve been practicing drawing, and little by little, I’ve found pencils I really like and paper that I enjoy drawing on. That made me want a hard-cover sketchbook that would work well with my favorite paper… so I decided to make one myself.

Clipped in place so the pages don’t move
First, I made bundles of folded paper called “signatures” and sewed them together one by one. Then I applied glue and held everything firmly in place with clips.

Reinforcing the spine
For the cover, I used fabric printed with a pattern featuring Jiro, our shop manager. I also decided to make use of the white area around the edge of the printed design.

Attaching the cardboard and fabric
It turned out to be much easier than I expected. I was even able to make it using thread, needles, and other materials I already had at home. There’s something really fun about making a sketchbook with paper and fabric that you personally love.

This is a “hairpin pouch” — every hairpin comes with one
We also use original fabric for the accessory pouches that we give as gifts to members of the Tamal Thunder Club. I have several different fabrics, so I’m thinking of making more sketchbooks using those as well.
If I get better at bookbinding and can make them more neatly, I might even sell them someday. For now, I’m going to keep practicing and enjoy making all kinds of them.
