I’ve Been Diagnosed with Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC)

I thought eye diseases were the one thing I could avoid

I live my life hoping not to get sick.
And among all illnesses, eye diseases were the one thing I truly wanted to avoid.

Eyes look so fragile, after all.
Even a single eyelash getting in can hurt so much it brings tears to your eyes.

Many years ago, I underwent LASIK surgery to improve my eyesight.
Even now, when I think back on it, I’m amazed that I had the courage to go through something so frightening.

Still, the world changed from blurry to sharp and clear.
In the end, I’m glad I did it.

That’s how important eyes are.

A condition called Central Serous Chorioretinopathy

Have you ever heard of a condition called Central Serous Chorioretinopathy?

It tends to affect people in their 30s to 50s, especially men.
Women are apparently less likely to develop it.
It’s considered a relatively rare disease.

The cause is said to be—stress.

…That made me pause and think, “Ah, I see.”

Maybe I spent too much time sitting in front of a computer.
Or maybe I was carrying stress without even realizing it.

A world that can be seen, but looks distorted

Fluid leaks from the blood vessels and accumulates at the back of the eye.
As a result, vision becomes blurry and distorted.

My eyesight itself is still good, so I can manage daily life.
But when I look with just one eye, power lines appear warped and bent.

After the examination, I was told,
“This has been there for quite a long time. It’s become chronic.”

Once it becomes chronic, the chances of full recovery are lower.

Next year’s appointment, and what lies ahead

I have another appointment scheduled for next year.
At that time, it will be decided whether treatment is possible or not.

If treatment is an option, it may involve laser therapy,
or procedures similar to what I experienced during LASIK.

Just thinking about that makes my feelings rather complicated.

Because that pool of fluid is always present in my field of vision,
I’m thinking of trying to draw it sometime.
It has a soft, gentle shape—maybe it could even become a pattern design.
